Swelling with difficulty swallowing or breathing is a hospital emergency, not a dental appointment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to reduce swelling \u2014 what actually works<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>First 24 to 48 hours: cold.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ice pack or frozen peas in a tea towel against the outside of the cheek. 15 to 20 minutes on, 15 to 20 minutes off, as much as you can manage while awake. Never place ice directly on skin. Smoking impairs healing outright.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Salt water rinses from day two.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Half a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water, gently, after meals.
